Yuletide Camellia

Camellila

No plant makes me feel more like Christmas than the appropriately named Yuletide Camellia. Bright red flowers with yellow gold centers cover the Yuletide from fall all the way through the Christmas season. The dark green glossy leaves of this plant are the perfect background for the blooms. This evergreen shrub can grow 8 to 10 feet tall and wide but can be pruned to any height. Camellias are slow growing and are hardy from zone 7 to 10 which makes them a perfect evergreen shrub for our climate.

Plant your Yuletide Camellia in a shady area with well drained soil rich in organic matter. Leaf mold compost is the perfect organic additive for your soil. Keep your camellia’s roots cool with a layer of organic mulch. Keep a regular watering schedule through the first year after planting your shrub to establish a strong root system. Once established , camellias are drought tolerant but need good water during the hot months of summer. Camellias can be grown as specimen plants to showcase your garden or as a hedge. Camellias can also be espaliered on a fence or trellis. Prune your Yuletide after it blooms to the desired height or shape. After pruning feed the shrub with an acidic fertilizer for azaleas and camellias. Once established your Yuletide camellia will give you multitudes of red blossoms that you can enjoy on the bush or cut and bring indoors for a festive holiday bouquet. The Yuletide will bring you joy for many Christmas says to come.
