Shrimp Plant

Shrimp Plant

Everyday we have customers who come to the nursery looking for the perfect plant for that one spot they keep having to replant. They want a perennial, a plant that attracts hummingbirds and butterflies, and of course one that is easy to grow. One of my go-to plants the last couple of years has been the shrimp plant. Of course, your grandmother knew what a wonderful plant this is but shrimp plants have been “out of style” until lately. Now we are seeing them everywhere in new colors and sizes.

Here’s what you need to know about shrimp plants for the Gulf coast area. They are evergreen in our mild climate unless we have a hard freeze and bloom almost continuously – 12 months a year. Pinching the tips or slight pruning keeps them bushy.
