Hindu Rope

succulentThe Hindu Rope plant, Hoya carnosa compacta, is a flowering succulent with thick, convoluted leaves and a vining growth habit. Once it reaches four or five years of age, it produces beautiful clusters of dime-sized flowers on peduncles.

Hindu Rope is very easy to grow and requires little care. Since it prefers temperatures no lower than 50 degrees Fahrenheit, it loves to be indoors in a window with bright light. They will grow in low light, but will thrive and bloom when they receive 4 to 6 hours of direct light per day.  Only water when the top 1/3 to 1/2 of the soil is dry.  Fertilize with a water-soluble fertilizer diluted to half strength every two months except for winter months when fertilizing should be skipped.  Maas Nursery recommends Microlife Liquid Organics or Lady Bug Natural Brand John’s Recipe Fertilizer.

The vines of the Hindu Rope can reach 6 to 8 ft in length. It is gorgeously displayed as the sole plant in a hanging basket or as the ‘spiller’ in an urn with an arrangement of various succulents. Do not remove the spent blooms since new flowers will grow from the base of the old blooms.  New plants can be started succulentquite easily from stem cuttings.
