Petunias

Wave PetuniaPetunias

Petunias are one of the most colorful, versatile and dependable annuals for our summer heat.

There are several varieties of petunias to choose from, all of which exhibit an abundance of color with blooms that vary from single to double and from small to large. The colors range from white, pale yellow to a vibrant purple, reds pinks and many shades in between.

Wave petunias grow about 4 to 6 inches tall and spread about 3 to 4 feet with 2- to 3-inch blooms, and are perfect as groundcover, in hanging baskets or in pots or window baskets.

PetuniaRambling petunias grow about 10 inches high and spread about 2 to 3 feet, and come in an array of colors.
Tidal wave petunias (Hegiflora) grow into a dense hedge of about 16-to 22 inches high

when planted 12 inches apart, and will become a garden spreader about 3 feet long and 8 to 10 inches high when planted 24 inches apart.

Single petunias are single petal blooms that come in a multitude of colors. Double petunias (Grandiflora hybrids) provide double petal flowers and come in beautiful single or mixed colors.

Supertunia are a long lasting heat loving variety that also out performs in the heat.

PetuniaLaura Bush, a vibrant purple, is an old fashion favorite that re-seeds itself each year, this one survived the “freeze” this winter and is already blooming in my yard.

All petunias need well-drained soil with 5 to 6 hours of sun for maximum blooms; fertilizer may be applied at the time of planting & monthly intervals, dead heading (removal of spend blooms) will also keep petunias blooming as well as an occasional trimming; a few stems at a time will keep the plant producing new growth without the appearance of being trimmed.

With a minimum amount of effort these colorful plants can be enjoyed now until frost in containers, baskets or in the beds.
