Angelonia

Angelonia angustifolia (Angelonia ‘Angel Mist Spreading’)

Life: Perennial

Size: 6-10″ tall, 20″ wide

Light: Full Sun

Water: Average

Soil: Acidic

An incredibly tollerant plant, it can withstand a large amount of heat, humidity, moisture, or drought, making it well-suited to both mixed and solo plantings in hanging baskets or large pots as well as in the garden. It has a spreading growth habit and is covered from spring to frost in snapdragon-like floral spikes. These flowers are white, pink, or purple in color and are shaped like miniature orchid blooms. Flower production is directly corrolated to sunlight exposure, so plant it in a sunny area and deadhead old blooms to keep bud production up.

Angelonia angustifolia (‘Angie Dark Blue’)

Life: Perennial

Size: 14-18″

Light: Full to Part Sun

Water: Average

Soil: Acidic

Like all Angelonias, it does well in both containers and beds, and has an upright to sprawling growth habit, though this variety is a little more compact than most. Full sun will keep the growth more compact, but it will flower equally well in partial shade. A heat lover, it is covered from spring until frost with spikes of deep bluish-purple flowers. Though the foliage will die back with the first freeze, it will come back with vigor in the spring.

Angelonia angustifolia (‘Hilo Princess’)

Life: Perennial

Size: 18-24″

Light: Full to Part Sun

Water: Average

Soil: Acidic

The heat-loving Angelonia hybrid that started it all! A lover of summer sun and heat, it is upright-to-sprawling, compact and well-branched, and covered with dense spikes of deep purple flowers with white centers from spring until frost. Will tollerate part shade, but grows more loosely. Will die back at the first freeze, but reemerges vigorously in the spring.

Angelonia angustifolia (‘Mandiana Blue’)

Life: Perennial

Size: 12-18″ tall, 12″ wide

Light: Full Sun

Water: Average

Soil: Acidic

Erect to sprawling, it has narrow leaves and eight inch spikes of lavender-colored flowers from spring until frost, even during the heat of summer. In fact, once it is established, it is fairly drought tollerant. It is beautiful in both pots and beds. Though the foliage will die with the first frost, the roots are hardy and will begin growing again as soon as spring warms up the ground.

Angelonia angustifolia (‘Serena’ Series)

Life: Annual

Size: 15-18″ tall, 12-14″ wide

Light: Full Sun

Water: Average, Drought Tollerant

Soil: Acidic

The first Angelonias available from seed! Excellent for the hot Texas summers, they have a very long blooming season and will attempt to smother themselves in beautiful ¾” purple, white, pink, or lavender-colored flower spikes. Once established, they can withstand most any amount of heat, humidity, or drought the climate can throw at them, and love to soak up the sun. Their growth is compact enough that they can be used in both containers and beds, with exceptional results.
