Indian Rubber Vine

Cryptostegia grandiflora (Malay/Palay/India Rubber Vine)

Life: Perennial

Size: 12-15′

Light: Full Sun

Water: Moist, Good Drainage

Soil: Fertile, Acidic to Neutral Loam

Gorgeous deep lavender trumpet shaped flowers bloom throughout warm weather. The dark green leaves are quite rubbery to the touch. Fast growing, it prefers plenty of sun and moist, fertile soil. Native to Madagascar, it was formerly grown there and in India to produce a poor quality rubber latex. As with most milky sapped plants, Rubber Vine is poisonous, containing glucosides which interfere with the heart and provoke stomach and intestinal upset. When trimming, wear gloves since the sap is very irritating to the skin. Discard what you trimmed rapidly because the dust from dried plants is also irritating.
