The Sweet Olive, or Tea Olive is an excellent shrub for our clay soil. It has very fragrant flowers. The blooms are heaviest in the spring, but the flowers will continue to bloom sporadically throughout the year. Once established, it requires little water and is also somewhat deer resistant. It can reach 10 feet as a dense shrub or it can be trained as a small tree.
The Sweet Olive likes morning sun and afternoon shade. If space is limited, it will grow in a container. Pinch off new growth tips to encourage dense foliage. It makes a nice gift for a new home owner or that hard to buy for person due to the low maintenance it requires.
