Ornamental Grass

Ornamental grasses add character to many types of gardens. Common uses include groundcover, specimen plants, erosion control, and as an interesting design elements. They are adaptable, can grow in poorer soils better than many other garden plants, and require little effort to maintain.

Ornamental grasses come in many heights, colors, textures and have varying water requirements. Grasses look well against a dark background when placed to catch morning or evening light and they add a significant vertical presence to the winter landscape, and when they catch the wind, they add movement and sound to the landscape not readily obtained from many other plants.

They can be used in mass plantings to create shades of color or as a single, eye-catching specimen, there is a grass (or two) for every situation!

We stock 12-14 varieties of ornamental grasses.

Carex buchananii (‘Red Rooster’ Carex)

Life: Perennial

Size: 24″ high, 36″ wide
Light: Full Sun to Partial Shade
Water: Moist with Good Drainage, Drought Tollerant
Soil: Acidic, Average to Fertile

An interesting change of pace from the normal ornamental grasses, this one has bright coppery foliage year round and a dried appearance even when actively growing. Its unusual appearance makes a stunning specimen or accent plant, especially with green ground covers beneath it. It is attractive and easy to grow, but not invasive. While it prefers evenly moist soil, it will tollerate a dry spell and considerable summer heat without trouble.

Carex comans (Bronze Carex)

Life: Perennial
Size: 10-12″ high, 12-20″ wide
Light: Full Sun to Partial Shade

Water: Moist with Good Drainage, Drought Tollerant
Soil: Acidic, Average to Fertile

An interesting change of pace from the normal ornamental grasses, this one is a golden-amber color during the whole growing season, except for in the spring, when new growth emerges coppery with pink highlights before assuming its usual honeyed tones. It is easy to grow; while it prefers evenly moist soil, it will tollerate a dry spell and considerable summer heat without trouble. It has a tidy, dense growth habit, sending up arching leaf blades which will curl down softly like a cascading fountain. A bold choice for a contrast plant in beds with green-leaved neighbors. It will die back with frost, but reemerges in the spring.
