okra_22Okra, Abelmoschus Esculentus, is a flowering annual in the Mallow family. It will grow 5-6 ft tall and produce hibiscus-like flowers and then seed pods which are the okra. It is very heat and drought tolerant. Okra needs full sun and well drained soil. Plant 12″ apart. The Clemson Spineless will fruit in 56-60 days. Pick okra when it is 3 inches long. Picking often encourages more production from summer into fall. The fuzzy green ribbed pod is high in vitamin C and fiber and fat free.
