Flame acanthus (Anisacanthus quadrifidus var. wrightii) is a wonderful small shrub that attracts hummingbirds like a magnet. The tubular orange red blooms were made with hummingbirds in mind. When in bloom the flame acanthus is a spectacular sight to see, flowers from top to bottom. Blooming from midsummer to frost this is perfect timing for hummingbirds migrating through our area between August and October.
Flame acanthus tolerates our heat and drought growing 3-5’ tall and 3-4’ wide. Trim flame acanthus back in early spring to keep its shape.
