We all need water. It is an essential component of life. We take the time to water our plants and yards, but sometimes we forget to hydrate ourselves. Hydration affects energy levels and brain function. Even slight dehydration can lead to a headache or affect your mood. Drinking water instead of soda, will greatly improve your bodies ability to function smoothly. Water energizes muscles for a better performance and less fatigue. It helps your kidneys cleanse the body, aids in digestion, absorption, circulation and transport of nutrients. Water helps to lubricate and cushion your joints. It helps to maintain body temperature during the hot summer months. Staying hydrated will reduce the signs of aging. Adding lemon to your water helps the body produce collagen, which is essential in smoothing out fine lines and wrinkles. Many different herbs make a pleasant addition to a glass of water.
Any of the mint varieties would be nice. Muddle the leaves in the bottom of the glass, then add ice and water, or just chilled water. I have mint all year long. Spearmint and peppermint are my favorites. I also have basil, parsley and rosemary all year long. Each can be a flavorful addition to some chilled water. Fruit and herb combinations are fun as well. Basil and strawberry or basil and watermelon are tasty combinations. Lemon, dill and a pinch of cayenne pepper is zesty on a hot afternoon.
One of my favorite combinations is lemon, cucumber, muddled mint and some shaved ginger root. It is very refreshing and invigorating. Herbs are so easy to grow and such a healthful addition to a glass of much needed water. Drink up and hydrate!
