Beautyberry (Callicarpa) is a great hedge for this area and a very pretty shrub this time of the year. It flowers a pinkish lavender flower in summer that turns into small clusters of lilac fruit along the branches. In the winter, it adds a neat shape to your garden.
It is a moderate grower at 3 to 4 feet high and wide. It will take full to part sun.

There are several different varieties of Beautyberries. Here at Maas we have Early Amethyst (Japanese), American, Chinese and Mexican Beautyberries.

Early Amethyst (Japanese) Beautyberry: Not edible for humans, but can be used to make herbal teas. Can also be cultivated as an ornamental tree.
American Beautyberry: Native to this area. Large clusters of purple berries eaten by birds and dear. The berries are consumable by people in small amounts only, and used in wines and jellies.
Chinese Beautyberry: Berries are very bitter. More tolerant to cold than American variety.
Perhaps the best part about this plant: It acts as an inspect repellent, especially for mosquitoes!
