Caesalpina

Caesalpinia pulcherrima (Peacock Flower ‘Pink’)

Life: Perennial

Size: 4-8′

Light: Full Sun

Water: Average, Well-Drained

Soil: Any

An absolutely gorgeous, incredibly showy bloomer! It certainly lives up to its name, with flowers as beautiful as any peacock’s feathers. They are bowl-shaped, 2-3″ across, with five crinkled pink petals edged in pale yellow and ten long, promenent stamens, borne in clusters 8-10″ tall. The bloom season lasts nearly year round in the tropics, but here in Texas it is normally restricted to late summer and fall, before frosts; the plant is tender to cold and is believed to come from the West Indies and tropical Americas. The leaves are also interesting, being fern-like. Do be careful, however, as the stems, branches and petioles are all armed with sharp spines.

An absolutely gorgeous, incredibly showy bloomer! The flowers are bowl-shaped, 2-3″ across, with five crinkled red petals edged in bright yellow and ten long, promenent stamens, borne in clusters 8-10″ tall. The bloom season lasts nearly year round in the tropics, but here in Texas it is normally restricted to late summer and fall, before frosts; the plant is tender to cold and is believed to come from the West Indies and tropical Americas. It often freezes to the ground, but will bounce back quickly in the spring. The leaves are also interesting, being fern-like.
